Water pollution and treatment

Sources of water pollution:

  • Sewage (untreated household waste)
  • Industrial effluents (factory chemicals)
  • Agricultural runoff (pesticides, fertilizers)
  • Plastic and garbage dumping

Treatment steps at a plant:

  1. Screening — remove big solids.
  2. Sedimentation — let dirt settle.
  3. Filtration — through sand and gravel.
  4. Disinfection — chlorine or UV to kill germs.
Example
Why boil water for drinking? Heat kills bacteria that cause cholera, typhoid, diarrhoea.
💡 Tip:Muddy water? Let it sit in a clean vessel — sediment settles; pour off the top; then filter and boil.
