Edible plant parts

Different parts of a plant are eaten:

  • Roots: carrot, radish, beetroot, sweet potato
  • Stems: potato (modified stem), ginger, sugarcane
  • Leaves: spinach, methi, coriander
  • Flowers: cauliflower, broccoli, banana flower
  • Fruits: mango, banana, tomato (yes, tomato is a fruit), brinjal
  • Seeds: rajma, chickpea (chana), peanuts, rice, wheat
Example
A potato is a stem (it grows underground but isn't a root). Onion is a modified stem too.
💡 Tip:Tomato, brinjal, capsicum, ladyfinger are all fruits (they have seeds inside) — even though we call them “vegetables” in cooking.
