Watch on YouTubeVideoDistillation and separating funnel
Distillation: evaporate a liquid, then COOL the vapour to condense it back to pure liquid. You keep both the solid AND pure water.
Used to purify water, make essential oils, and in petroleum refining.
Separating funnel: separates two immiscible liquids (don't mix) — like oil and water. The heavier liquid settles at the bottom; open the stopcock to drain it off.
Example
Sea water → distill → salt (in pan) + pure water (condensed) — both recovered separately.
Oil and water in a funnel → open tap → water drains first, oil remains on top.
Oil and water in a funnel → open tap → water drains first, oil remains on top.
💡 Tip:Distillation saves water in salt plants; just evaporation loses it.
