Watch on YouTubeVideoWord problems: lifts, temperatures, scores
Translate the story into + and – first. Then compute.
- Going up → +; going down → –
- Deposit → +; withdraw → –
- Warming → +; cooling → –
- Gain → +; loss → –
Example
A lift starts at floor –2 (basement). Goes up 5, down 3, up 4.
Final = –2 + 5 – 3 + 4 = +4 (4th floor).
Final = –2 + 5 – 3 + 4 = +4 (4th floor).
💡 Tip:Always write the equation before computing. Saves you from flipping signs by mistake.
