What is symmetry?

Symmetry means balance. A shape is symmetric if one part matches another exactly under some operation — folding, rotating, or mirror-reflecting.

Two main types:

  • Line (reflection) symmetry — if you fold it, halves match.
  • Rotational symmetry — spin it and it looks the same.

Symmetry is everywhere: butterflies, faces, flowers, snowflakes, buildings.

Example
A butterfly's wings: left matches right when folded along the body line. Line symmetric.
💡 Tip:Symmetry is the mathematics of 'sameness' under a change.
