Indian vs International number systems

India writes large numbers using lakhs and crores:

  • 1,000 = one thousand
  • 1,00,000 = one lakh (100 thousand)
  • 1,00,00,000 = one crore (10 million)

International system uses millions and billions:

  • 1,000,000 = one million
  • 1,000,000,000 = one billion

Note the commas — Indian system uses 2,2,3 grouping; International uses 3,3,3.

Example
23,45,678 (Indian) = 2,345,678 (International) = two million three hundred forty-five thousand six hundred seventy-eight.
💡 Tip:In both systems, the digits themselves are the SAME — just the grouping differs.
