Place value: the meaning of each digit

In the number 4,372, the same digit means different things depending on WHERE it sits.

  • 4 is in thousands → value 4,000
  • 3 is in hundreds → 300
  • 7 is in tens → 70
  • 2 is in ones → 2

Face value = digit itself (7 is always 7). Place value = digit × position weight.

Expanded form of 4,372: 4000 + 300 + 70 + 2.

Example
In 5,086: place value of 8 = 80; face value of 8 = 8; place value of 0 = 0.
💡 Tip:Each step left, place value multiplies by 10.
