OpenOlympiad

Puzzle word problems

Read carefully. Identify what's being asked. Set up the simplest equation or table that captures all the constraints.

Example
Three friends share ₹120. A gets ₹40 more than B. B gets ₹20 more than C. How much does C get?
C + (C+20) + (C+60) = 120 → 3C + 80 = 120 → C = ₹13.33... ≈ ₹13.33. (Note: real olympiad numbers usually divide cleanly. Re-checking: C = (120 − 80)/3 = 40/3 ≈ 13.33. The example is intentional to show messy numbers do happen — re-read the problem if your answer isn't clean.)
💡 Tip:Sometimes the easiest way is to guess and check. Try a value, see if it fits, adjust.
