From cotton to cloth — step by step

  1. Ginning: separate cotton fibres from seeds (done by hand or machine).
  2. Spinning: twist loose fibres into continuous yarn (on a spinning wheel or modern spinning mill).
  3. Weaving: interlace two sets of yarn (warp and weft) on a loom to make woven fabric.
  4. Knitting: use a single yarn looped continuously to make stretchy fabric (sweaters, socks).
  5. Dyeing + finishing: colour and treat the fabric.
Example
Gandhi's charkha spinning wheel is a symbol of Indian independence because it stood for self-reliance in cloth-making.

💡 Tip:Weaving needs a loom (2 yarn sets); knitting needs just needles (1 continuous yarn).
