Deficiency diseases

When a nutrient is missing long-term:

  • Scurvy — bleeding gums, weak wounds. Cause: lack of Vit C.
  • Night blindness — can't see in low light. Cause: Vit A.
  • Rickets — weak, bent bones. Cause: Vit D / calcium.
  • Beri-beri — weak muscles, nerve damage. Cause: Vit B₁.
  • Anaemia — pale, tired. Cause: Iron.
  • Goitre — swollen neck (thyroid). Cause: Iodine.
  • Kwashiorkor — swollen belly, stunted growth. Cause: Protein.
  • Marasmus — extreme thinness. Cause: severe energy + protein deficiency.
Example
Why did sailors centuries ago get scurvy? Long sea voyages with no fresh fruit → no Vit C → bleeding gums and weakness.
💡 Tip:Deficiency diseases are PREVENTABLE with a balanced diet. That's why mid-day meals exist.
