Concept 5 of 8Foundation
Watch on YouTubeVideoRoman numerals
Before Hindu-Arabic digits, Romans used letters. Still seen today on clock faces and chapter numbers.
- I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000
- Write by adding from left: VII = 5 + 1 + 1 = 7
- Small letter BEFORE larger means subtract: IX = 10 – 1 = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CM = 900
Rules: Never repeat V, L, D. Never repeat a symbol 4+ times.
Example
2024 in Roman = MMXXIV (1000 + 1000 + 10 + 10 + 4).
💡 Tip:Read left to right. If a smaller value comes first — subtract; else add.
